Share Your Story of Healing, Resilience, and Artistic Expression in Cape Verde



Dear Writers, Poets, and Artists,

We are thrilled to announce the upcoming second edition of “Canja Pa Nos Alma,” the Cape Verdean version of “Chicken Soup for the Soul,” titled “Essencia di Nos Luta.” This edition aims to celebrate the remarkable stories of healing, resilience, and artistic expression that have emerged from Cape Verde’s history of struggle and adversity.

We invite both previous contributors from our first edition and new writers to share their heartfelt stories, poems, and artistic works that reflect the essence of Cape Verde’s collective journey. Whether you write in Kriolu, English, or Portuguese, we welcome your unique perspective and creative expression.

Theme: “Essencia di Nos Luta” (The Essence of Our Struggle): Healing, Resilience, and Artistic Expression in Cape Verde

We encourage you to explore a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Personal experiences of overcoming adversity and finding resilience
  • Reflections on the effects of historical trauma on Cape Verdean identity and culture
  • Stories of social justice, activism, and community empowerment
  • Artistic expressions that capture the struggles, dreams, and hopes of the Cape Verdean people
  • Poems that evoke the emotions and resilience embedded within Cape Verdean history
  • Narratives of migration, diaspora, and the search for a sense of belonging

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Language: Submissions can be in Kriolu, English, or Portuguese.
  2. Genres: We accept stories, poems, personal essays, and visual art (paintings, illustrations, photography) that align with the theme.
  3. Length: Prose pieces should be a maximum of 1,500 words. Poetry submissions can consist of up to three poems.
  4. Format: Please submit your work in a Word document or PDF file, along with a short author bio (50-100 words) and a brief explanation of how your submission relates to the theme.
  5. Deadline: The submission deadline is January 15 2024.

Please email your submissions to []. In the subject line, mention “Submission: Essencia di Nos Luta.” Include your name, contact information, and the language of your submission (Kriolu, English, or Portuguese).

Note: As this is an opportunity to share deeply personal and meaningful experiences, we encourage you to ensure that your work respects the sensitivity of the theme while offering a message of hope and inspiration.

Selected contributors will have their work published in “Canja Pa Nos Alma: Essencia di Nos Luta,” reaching a wide audience of Cape Verdean readers and enthusiasts.
